Golfing in Destin, FL

The Emerald Coast runs 12 months of golf — here's where to play, when to go, and what the rounds actually cost.

Destin's golf scene gets overlooked by visitors who come for the beach and realize too late they should have brought their clubs. The Emerald Coast has a legitimately strong collection of courses — a Tom Fazio design through longleaf pines at Kelly Plantation, bay-view layouts at Regatta Bay and the Links at Sandestin, and the under-the-radar Emerald Bay in Niceville that Golf Digest has consistently rated above the better-known options. There are courses for serious low-handicappers and courses for groups that just want to ride carts and enjoy the weather.

The season here is 12 months. No winter closures, no greens fees that factor in heating costs, no mud season. What you do have is a shoulder-season window from September through May when humidity drops, course conditions peak, and pricing softens. This guide covers what's actually worth playing, what to expect on costs, and how to structure a trip that mixes rounds with beach time.

The Emerald Coast Golf Scene: What Makes It Different

Florida golf gets a lot of attention for its resort courses in Orlando or the private clubs of Palm Beach, but the Panhandle has always had a quieter, more accessible golf culture. The courses here aren't trying to be Augusta — they're well-maintained daily-fee tracks built around the natural landscape of longleaf pine, coastal scrub, and the protected waters of Choctawhatchee Bay. That gives you fairway corridors through old-growth pine stands, holes that open onto bay views, and the general sense that you're actually outdoors rather than on a manufactured exhibition course.

The practical reality for a visiting golfer: you can schedule 18 holes in the morning, be on the beach by noon, and have a waterfront dinner that evening. That combination is genuinely hard to replicate at most golf destinations. The Destin/Miramar Beach area is compact enough that the drive from most vacation rentals to the first tee is 10 to 20 minutes.

Course variety: The lineup spans from challenging — Kelly Plantation plays at over 7,000 yards from the tips, a genuine test with multiple forced carries over wetlands — to approachable, with Indian Bayou's 27-hole public facility suited to higher handicaps and groups that just want a fun day out. Sandestin Resort adds four courses with different character inside a single resort campus, including one private-access course that requires either a resort stay or a member connection.

Green fees in context: Destin golf runs cheaper than you might expect for a Gulf Coast resort destination. Peak summer pricing at the top courses reaches $100–130 a round, but shoulder-season rates — especially October through February — often land in the $65–95 range. Indian Bayou and the Fort Walton Beach municipal course bring that floor considerably lower. It's not Myrtle Beach's volume economy, but it's solidly affordable for the quality level.

Top Golf Courses Near Destin

These four courses cover the range of what Destin-area golf offers, from the most serious to the most accessible:

Kelly Plantation Golf Club

Best for: serious golfers, low handicappers, one-round bucket-list plays. Kelly Plantation is the design flagship of the Destin area. Tom Fazio laid out this 7,099-yard, par-72 course in 1998 on land that was once a historic cotton plantation on Choctawhatchee Bay. The layout moves through old-growth longleaf pines, across natural wetlands, and along the bay shoreline — several holes have genuinely dramatic water views. The fairway corridors are tight enough that accuracy off the tee matters, and the greens run fast. It's the kind of course where a 10-handicapper should plan to enjoy the walk rather than expect a career round.

Green fees typically run $85–130 depending on season and time of day. Located at 307 Kelly Plantation Drive, about 15 minutes from central Destin. Tee times book quickly in peak season — reserve a week or more in advance for prime morning slots in July and August.

Regatta Bay Golf & Country Club

Best for: golfers who want premium views and a good experience for mixed skill levels. Regatta Bay is a 6,891-yard par-72 that wraps around Regatta Bay itself, with multiple holes playing directly along the waterline. On a clear morning — which describes most mornings in May and October — the combination of emerald water, manicured greens, and pine-framed sky is genuinely beautiful. The layout is more forgiving off the tee than Kelly Plantation, making it a better choice for groups with mixed skill levels.

Located at 465 Regatta Bay Blvd in Destin. Green fees typically $70–110. The clubhouse has a solid restaurant for post-round food. This is the most popular single course in the immediate Destin area for good reason — it combines quality, aesthetics, and playability.

Emerald Bay Golf Club — Niceville

Best for: value-conscious golfers willing to drive 15 minutes north. Emerald Bay in Niceville is the best-kept secret in the area. Golf Digest has consistently rated it among the best courses in the Florida Panhandle. The 18-hole par-72 layout weaves through wetland preserves, pine stands, and open coastal scrub — the views are different from the bay-front courses but no less beautiful. It's quieter, less resort-polished, and priced accordingly.

Green fees at Emerald Bay typically run $55–90, meaningfully below Kelly Plantation and Regatta Bay for a comparable quality round. If you're playing 2+ rounds during your trip, this should be one of them.

Indian Bayou Golf Club

Best for: groups with mixed skill levels, higher handicappers, budget-conscious golfers. Indian Bayou is a 27-hole facility in Destin with three interchangeable 9-hole loops (Magnolia, Creek, and Dogwood). It's the most accessible course in terms of both price and difficulty — a genuine public-access facility that local golfers actually use. Green fees run $35–65 depending on the combination and season. Located at 1 Country Club Drive, Destin.

Sandestin Golf: Four Courses Inside One Resort

Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort sits about 8 miles east of central Destin on US-98 and is one of the few places on the Gulf Coast where a resort actually delivers on its golf marketing. It has four distinct courses on campus:

  • Baytowne Golf Club — Open to the public. 18 holes through the heart of Sandestin village. A fun, casual layout suited to most golfers. Green fees $60–85.
  • The Links at Sandestin — 18 holes along Choctawhatchee Bay and the back bayou. Links-style design, open to the public. More wind-exposed than tree-lined courses. Green fees $70–100.
  • Raven Golf Club — Most scenic and challenging of the open-access courses. 18 holes through a wetland and pine preserve. Multiple forced carries, elevated tee boxes. Green fees $85–120.
  • Burnt Pine Golf Club — Semi-private. Requires a Sandestin resort stay, member invitation, or premium package. Tom Fazio-designed, 7,000+ yards. If you can get on it, it's the best in the Sandestin stable. Green fees through resort packages run $120–180+.

For non-resort guests: Baytowne, The Links, and Raven are all bookable through Sandestin's tee time system without a resort stay. Book direct through sandestin.com for current rates and availability.

Best use case for Sandestin golf: Groups or couples where some members want to play and others want the beach or shopping. Sandestin has its own beach club, Baytowne Wharf village for dining, and is large enough that a group can split activities and reconvene for dinner without anyone driving anywhere.

Perfect fall morning for golf on the Emerald Coast Florida with clear blue sky and mild weather

Best Time to Golf in Destin

The calendar matters significantly for Destin golf. The short version: fall and late winter are ideal, summer is doable but demands early tee times, and spring sees the busiest courses.

October — November: Peak Golf Season

This is when serious golfers come. Temperatures drop to highs of 70–78°F, humidity falls, and the Gulf Coast light in October morning hours is exceptional. The Destin Fishing Rodeo (all of October) draws anglers, not golfers, so courses stay uncrowded. November is even quieter — highs in the low-to-mid 70s, minimal crowds, and prime course conditions. Rates are shoulder-season pricing. If you have schedule flexibility, a golf trip timed to October or November is the best combination this area offers.

December — February: Off-Season Value

The Gulf Coast winter is nothing like inland winters. December through February sees highs in the 60–70°F range, genuine blue-sky days, and the lowest green fees of the year. Mornings can be brisk (50s°F), but it warms into comfortable conditions by 10am. Tee times are genuinely available without weeks of advance booking, and courses appreciate the business. Green fees at peak properties often drop to their floor pricing.

March — May: Spring Shoulder Season

Spring Break (mid-March through April) brings significant crowds to the beach, and some of that energy spills into golf. Rates start creeping up toward summer pricing by May. That said, May is beautiful for golf — warm but not brutal, and the courses are in excellent condition after the mild winter. The Gulf water starts warming, so a morning round followed by an afternoon swim is genuinely pleasant.

June — August: Early Morning Only

Summer golf in Destin is for people who are committed to it. By 10am, temperatures hit 85–90°F with substantial humidity. The solution local golfers use: book the 7am or 7:30am tee time, finish by noon, hit the beach after. Courses during peak summer are priced at their high end. If summer is your only window, it's workable — just don't book a 10am start expecting to enjoy it.

Practical Tips: Tee Times, Gear & What to Know Before You Book

Booking tee times: Every major course here supports online booking. GolfNow aggregates availability across the area and can surface last-minute deals, particularly for afternoon rounds. Direct booking through the club's own website is usually the same price with no service fees. In July and August, the most popular morning slots at Kelly Plantation and Regatta Bay can book out 7–10 days ahead. Outside peak summer, you can usually grab something with 2–3 days' notice.

What to wear: Most courses require collared shirts and prohibit denim. Soft spikes or spikeless shoes are standard; metal spikes are not allowed at the nicer courses. In summer, lightweight moisture-wicking fabric is more practical than cotton. In November–February, a light jacket for the first few holes is worth packing.

Cart policy: Most courses require cart usage during the summer months due to pace-of-play rules and the heat. Fall and winter often allow walking, which is genuinely pleasant on courses like Emerald Bay and Kelly Plantation where the routing takes you through natural areas you'd otherwise miss at cart speed.

Club rentals: Every major course in the area offers rental sets. Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay, and Sandestin's courses typically have premium rental sets for $50–75 a round. If you're flying in and don't want airline bag fees, renting locally is a reasonable call — rental quality at these courses is legitimate (Titleist, Callaway, or TaylorMade sets, not bottom-shelf irons).

Twilight rates: All major courses offer twilight pricing, typically starting 2–3 hours before sunset. In summer that might mean 5pm or later; in December it's around 3pm. You likely won't complete 18 holes, but 12–15 holes at $40–60 less than the standard rate is an appealing option if your afternoon is already committed to the beach.

Getting around: You'll need a car. The courses are spread across a 15-mile corridor from central Destin to Niceville, and there's no practical transit between them. Drive times from Miramar Beach vacation rentals to most courses run 10–20 minutes outside peak traffic. Arriving at the course 30 minutes before your tee time leaves room for the range and pro shop.
