Driving from Jacksonville to Destin

375 miles, about 5 hours, and one of the easier long drives in Florida. Here's how to do it right.

Jacksonville is Florida’s largest city by land area, and it sits about 375 miles east of Destin — roughly a 5-hour drive depending on traffic through Tallahassee. It’s a straightforward interstate route that thousands of Floridians make every summer, and with a little planning it’s a genuinely pleasant road trip.

This guide covers the best route, when to leave, where to stop, and what to expect when you roll into Destin.

I-10 West through north Florida toward Destin

The Route: I-10 West to US-331 South

There’s really only one sensible route: take I-10 West from Jacksonville all the way through Tallahassee, then drop south on US-331 (or US-85 if you prefer) into the Destin–Fort Walton Beach corridor. The total distance is about 375 miles and Google Maps will clock it at 4h 45m to 5h 15m in normal conditions.

  • Jacksonville to Tallahassee: 3 hours on I-10. Flat, fast, mostly pine forest with a few truck stops. Cruise control country.
  • Tallahassee to DeFuniak Springs: Another 45–60 min on I-10 West. The landscape opens up and gets hillier.
  • US-331 South: Turn here (Exit 85 off I-10) for a scenic 40–50 min run down through Freeport to Destin. You’ll cross Choctawhatchee Bay on a bridge with a glimpse of the Emerald Coast before you land.

Alternate: Some people take US-90 (the old pre-interstate highway) instead of I-10. It’s slower but runs through Quincy, Marianna, and other small towns if you want a more scenic drive. Add 45–60 minutes.

Best Stops on the Drive

You don’t have to white-knuckle it straight through. There are a few good breaks along the way:

  • Tallahassee (mile ~200): The natural midpoint. Good restaurants, a Target if you forgot anything, and Cascades Park if the kids need to run around. Plan 30–45 minutes here.
  • Stuckey’s in Monticello or Chipley: Classic Florida road trip fuel — pecan rolls and tourist kitsch. Worth a 10-minute stretch.
  • Freeport (US-331, almost there): Last real town before Destin. Gas is often cheaper here than on 98. Fill up before you hit the resort corridor.
  • Choctawhatchee Bay Bridge: Not a stop exactly, but slow down a little to enjoy the view. First glimpse of Emerald Coast water, and it’s the signal that you’re almost there.
Traffic tips for the I-10 drive from Jacksonville to Destin during summer

When to Leave & How to Beat Traffic

The drive is easy in the middle of the week. On summer Saturdays (the changeover day for most rentals), it can add an hour or more. Here’s how to beat it:

  • Leave before 7 AM Saturday: You’ll arrive in Destin around noon, ahead of the wave of Atlanta and Birmingham traffic coming down from the north.
  • Avoid 10 AM – 2 PM Saturday arrivals: This is when US-98 in Destin gets gridlocked. The rental switchover is at 4 PM and thousands of cars hit the road mid-morning.
  • The Sunday workaround: If you can arrive Sunday instead of Saturday, you’ll find much lighter traffic. Most departure chaos happens Saturday morning.
  • Waze over Google Maps: Waze is better at routing around Tallahassee construction and US-98 backups. Worth having both open.

What Awaits When You Arrive in Destin

After 5 hours on I-10, the reward is immediate. The water genuinely looks like it does in the photos — that distinctive emerald-green from the sugary white quartz sand. A few first-day tips:

  • Stock up at Winn-Dixie or Publix before you get to the beach corridor — both are on US-98 and both get packed after checkout time
  • Grab seafood dinner at HarborWalk Village (the harbor is walkable and the sunset views are free)
  • Watch the beach flag color at your rental or at Henderson State Park before going in — Gulf currents can be strong in summer
  • If you’re staying at our Miramar Beach rental or Destin rental, check-in details will be in your Vacasa confirmation email
