About Blackwater River State Park

Pristine river perfect for kayaking and tubing! Crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, and beautiful nature trails.

Blackwater River State Park protects a stunning section of one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the world. The Blackwater River earns its name from the dark tannin-stained water (like tea) created by decaying vegetation, but don't let the color fool you - the water is incredibly clean and perfect for swimming, tubing, and paddling.

River Activities:

  • Kayaking & Canoeing - Peaceful paddling through pristine wilderness
  • Tubing - Float lazily downstream (outfitters nearby offer rentals and shuttles)
  • Swimming - Crystal-clear water and white-sand beaches
  • Fishing - Bass, bream, and catfish
  • Nature Observation - Abundant wildlife along the riverbanks

Land Activities:

  • Nature Trails - Hiking through longleaf pine forest
  • Camping - Peaceful campground with modern facilities
  • Picnicking - Shaded pavilions near the river
  • Wildlife Viewing - Deer, turkey, and various bird species

Why Visit Blackwater River:

  • One of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the nation
  • Significantly cooler than Gulf waters - refreshing on hot days
  • Gentle current perfect for tubing and beginner paddlers
  • Beautiful natural environment untouched by development
  • White-sand river beaches unlike typical freshwater rivers

Park Information:

  • Hours: 8am - sunset daily
  • Entrance Fee: $6 per vehicle (2-8 people), $4 single occupant
  • Location: About 50 miles northeast of Destin (approximately 1 hour drive)
  • Camping: 30 campsites with water and electric hookups

Outfitters & Rentals:

  • Shuttle services available for river trips
  • Trips ranging from 2 hours to full-day adventures
  • Life jackets and equipment provided

Best Time to Visit:

  • Summer: Perfect for swimming and tubing (most popular)

  • Winter: Peaceful paddling for experienced kayakers (cold water!)

What Visitors Say:

  • "The water is so clear and beautiful - nothing like it!"
  • "Best tubing experience ever - so peaceful and natural"
  • "A refreshing break from saltwater - cooler temperatures"
  • "Feels like a million miles from civilization"

Pro Tips:

  • Cooler water than the Gulf - great relief from summer heat
  • Sunscreen still essential despite tree cover on parts of river
  • Bring insect repellent for hiking trails
