Grocery Stores in Destin & Miramar Beach

Stock your vacation rental kitchen like a local — the honest guide to where, when, and how to shop on the Emerald Coast.

One of the biggest advantages of renting a vacation home over a hotel is the kitchen — and one of the first questions every renter asks is "where do we shop?" The good news: the 98 corridor through Destin and Miramar Beach is lined with grocery options ranging from budget-friendly Walmart runs to the gourmet-focused Fresh Market. The challenge is timing and knowing which store matches your needs.

This guide covers every major option — chains, specialty stores, and local seafood markets — along with practical tips for stocking a vacation rental kitchen without overspending or making three trips.

Publix — The Most Convenient Option

Publix is the dominant grocery chain along the Emerald Coast, and for good reason — the stores are clean, well-stocked, and the staff is reliably friendly. There are multiple Publix locations within easy reach of any Destin or Miramar Beach rental:

  • Publix at Destin Commons — Attached to the Destin Commons outdoor mall off US-98. Large, well-organized, with a good deli and prepared foods section. Can get crowded on Saturday afternoons in summer when week-turnovers hit all at once — midweek mornings are far easier.
  • Publix at Miramar Beach — The Publix anchoring the Miramar Beach Shopping Center on US-98 is the closest major grocery option for Miramar Beach rentals. Good produce, a solid wine selection, and typically less frantic than the Destin Commons location on peak weekends.
  • Publix near Sandestin — A smaller Publix within the Sandestin resort corridor, extremely convenient if you're staying on that end of 98. Comparable prices and selection; tends to be a little less crowded.

Publix prices are moderate — not the cheapest, but not premium either. Their store-brand GreenWise line is solid for organics. The deli counter is genuinely useful for a quick pre-beach lunch: rotisserie chickens, prepared sides, and subs made to order.

Pro tip: Publix runs BOGO deals weekly on a rotating basis — seafood, meats, wines, and specialty items are commonly included. Check the app before your first shop and you can save meaningfully on a week's groceries.

Walmart — Best for Budget & Bulk Buying

If you're feeding a large group or just want to minimize the grocery bill, Walmart is the clear winner. There's a Walmart Supercenter on US-98 in Destin — large, well-stocked, and noticeably cheaper than Publix on almost everything: beer, snacks, sunscreen, pool floats, paper goods, and staples like eggs, bread, and pasta.

For a big group trip, doing the initial stock-up run at Walmart and filling in produce, seafood, and specialty items at Publix is the strategy that works best. You'll save $50–$100 on a full cart compared to going all-Publix.

Walmart in Destin also carries a solid selection of beach and outdoor gear — sand toys, floats, folding chairs, small coolers, and fishing gear. If you forgot something from home, this is your first stop.

Timing note: The Destin Walmart gets genuinely chaotic on Saturday afternoons in July and August as week-turnover happens and new renters arrive. If you arrive Saturday, hit it early morning (7–8am) or use Walmart Grocery pickup ordered in advance — it's well worth it during peak season. Weekday mornings are easy year-round.

The Fresh Market — Specialty & Gourmet

There's a Fresh Market in Destin along the US-98 corridor — it's the go-to for higher-end grocery needs: an impressive seafood and meat counter, a large cheese and charcuterie selection, prepared foods (their soups and rotisserie options are genuinely good), specialty pantry items, and a wine and craft beer selection that goes well beyond what Publix carries.

The Fresh Market is where you go when you want to cook something that actually feels like a vacation splurge — a nice steak for the grill, fresh Gulf fish, imported cheeses, a bottle of something worth opening. The quality of their seafood counter is noticeably above Publix, and staff behind the meat and seafood case generally know what they're talking about.

It's premium-priced, no question. Don't do your weekly staples shop here. But for a special dinner in or a well-provisioned beach picnic, it earns its spot. Their prepared food section can completely solve dinner if you don't feel like cooking — quality significantly above grocery-store average.

The store is also calmer than either Publix or Walmart — less crowded, more leisurely. Note: No Whole Foods or Trader Joe's in Destin — the nearest of both are roughly 50 miles west in Pensacola.

Fresh Seafood Markets — Buy Direct Off the Boats

If you're staying in Destin, you have access to some of the freshest Gulf seafood in the country — and buying it direct from a local market instead of a grocery store makes a real difference in quality and often price per pound. A few standouts:

  • Destin Ice Seafood Market & Deli — Right on Destin Harbor, this is the most iconic local seafood shop in the area. Fresh catch from local boats, shrimp by the pound, stone crab in season, smoked fish spread, and prepared options. You can often see the charter boats at the dock nearby that caught what's in the case that morning. It smells like actual seafood — which is exactly the point.
  • Harbor Docks Fish Market — Connected to the Harbor Docks restaurant at Destin Harbor. Fresh fish, Gulf shrimp, and seasonally-focused offerings. Ask what's fresh off the boat today — the staff know.
  • AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar Market — Another waterfront option on Destin Harbor. Fresh Gulf shrimp, whole fish, fillets, and a selection of prepared and smoked items. Oysters are a specialty.
  • Lucky Snapper Grill & Bar — Has a market section with fresh fish and Gulf shrimp alongside the restaurant. Less of a full market than Destin Ice, but a solid pickup option.

Gulf grouper, red snapper, or shrimp bought fresh and grilled simply in your vacation rental is one of the best meals you'll eat all week — and it's cheaper than ordering the same thing at a restaurant. For the complete breakdown, see our fresh seafood markets guide.

Tips for Stocking a Vacation Rental Kitchen

Most vacation rental kitchens have the basics — pots, pans, a coffee maker — but not much else. Here's how to shop smart for a week-long stay and avoid the classic mistakes:

  • Shop on arrival day, not Saturday afternoon. Saturday afternoon in Destin in July is checkout-day chaos. Use Walmart Grocery pickup ordered in advance, or shop early morning (7–9am). Any other arrival day is fine at normal hours.
  • Stock breakfast and lunch first. Coffee (and filters — the rental may or may not have them), eggs, bread, deli meat, fruit, and snacks cover the days without requiring cooking. Dinner is where you decide meal-by-meal.
  • Don't overbuy perishables on day one. A classic vacation rental mistake is buying a full week's worth of fresh produce immediately. Buy 3–4 days at a time and restock mid-week. You'll eat out more than you plan.
  • Buy seafood the day you'll eat it. Gulf seafood should be eaten fresh. Plan which nights you're cooking in and pick up fish or shrimp that morning. Destin Ice or The Fresh Market for quality; Publix works fine for a last-minute run.
  • Budget the bar first. Total Wine & More in the area has the best prices on spirits and wine. Beer is cheapest at Walmart. For a group of 8–12, setting up the bar first makes the week significantly cheaper than buying drinks out every night.
  • Plan 2–3 real dinners in. Even if you eat out most nights, a few home meals — especially with fresh Gulf seafood — are memorable and save $100+ compared to restaurant dining for a group.
  • Check for starter supplies when you arrive. Most rentals leave oil, salt, maybe coffee — but don't assume. Add a small supply run to your first-day plan and confirm what's there before unpacking the bags.

Stay Where the Kitchen Earns Its Keep

Both our rentals have real kitchens — not token kitchenettes, but full setups with everything you need to actually cook. The Miramar Beach house has 4 bedrooms, a private pool, and sleeps 8 from $225/night. The Destin house is 3.5 bedrooms, pet-friendly, sleeps 12 from $110/night. You'll save that price difference on groceries alone compared to hotel rooms and restaurant breakfasts every morning.
