Destin is seafood country — but you can eat very well here if steak is what you're after.
Destin's food identity is built around seafood — that's just the truth. Fresh Gulf grouper, local shrimp, chargrilled oysters straight off the boat. But every group traveling to the Emerald Coast has at least one person who wants a steak, and Destin has more to offer on that front than most visitors expect. From a legendary Irish pub that's been the standard-bearer for steak in Northwest Florida for decades to upscale resort restaurants with real culinary programs, there are genuine options here.
This guide covers the actual best steak options in Destin and Miramar Beach — what to order, what to expect price-wise, and when to book ahead. No generic lists, just places worth your time and money.
Destin doesn't have the white-tablecloth steakhouse density of a major city. You won't find a Morton's or a Capital Grille on Scenic Gulf Drive. What you will find is a handful of genuinely good steak options at different price points — and in a place where the default move is to order whatever swam in yesterday, a well-executed steak can actually feel like a discovery.
The best approach depends on what you're after:
That last option is not a cop-out — if you're staying in a vacation rental with an outdoor grill, it's genuinely the best steak experience available in Destin at any price. A prime ribeye from a local market runs $14–22 per steak, and you'll eat better than most restaurants on this list for half the cost. But for those who want someone else to cook, here's where to go.
If you ask a local where to get a steak in Destin, they'll say McGuire's without pausing to think. This place is an institution in Northwest Florida — the original Pensacola location opened in 1977 and has fed more senators, generals, and football coaches than any restaurant in the Panhandle. The Destin location at Destin Commons carries the same DNA: dollar bills covering the ceiling, a proper bar program with an Irish whiskey list that goes embarrassingly deep, live music most nights, and steaks that can anchor a meal.
What to order: The 18-oz ribeye is the move. McGuire's ages their beef on-site and cooks over a real flame — the crust, the fat render, and the texture are all what you want from a ribeye. The Senate Bean Soup is a tradition served every single day since opening, based on the original recipe from the U.S. Senate cafeteria. Don't skip it as a starter. The prime rib comes in three cuts — the 16-oz king cut is the right choice if you're going that route.
Price range: Steaks run $38–65 depending on cut and size. The ribeyes are mid-$40s. Not cheap but fair for the quality. The bar menu has more budget-friendly options if someone in your group wants to keep it light.
The atmosphere: Loud, celebratory, genuinely fun. McGuire's is not a quiet romantic dinner spot — it's a feast-and-celebrate kind of place. For a large vacation group, it's almost a required stop.
Reservations: Accepted and strongly recommended on weekends from May through August. Walk-in waits hit 60–90 minutes on Saturday nights in summer. The bar seats on a first-come basis if you're flexible. Located at Destin Commons, so free parking is never an issue.
For a proper upscale steak experience in Destin, the best option is The CRAFT Bar + Kitchen at Henderson Beach Resort (a Curio Collection by Hilton property on Scenic Gulf Drive). The restaurant has a refined menu with a rotating selection of steak cuts — typically a center-cut filet, a bone-in ribeye, and rotating specials — sourced from quality suppliers and executed with a level of kitchen technique the casual waterfront spots don't match.
What to order: The bone-in ribeye when it's on the menu. The filet is the reliable safe choice. Sides are ordered separately and portioned well — the whipped sweet potato and the truffle fries are both worth adding. The wine list is one of the better ones on the Emerald Coast.
Price range: Entrees run $45–85. This is the most expensive option on this list, but it's in a different tier of execution. The resort setting means you're paying some real estate premium — the view of Henderson Beach State Park from the patio at sunset is legitimately beautiful.
Good for: Anniversary dinners, honeymooners, anyone who wants to dress up slightly and not feel out of place, groups of two to four. The dining room is quieter and more intimate than McGuire's. Reservations are necessary for weekend summer service — book at least a week out for a July or August Saturday.
Also worth knowing: Whale's Tail Bar & Grill on Scenic Gulf Drive does a solid sirloin and serves what might be the best Angus beef burger in Destin proper. Casual and beachside, good for lunch without the reservation pressure or resort pricing.
Given that you're in one of the best seafood markets in the entire Panhandle, the smart move if you want steak in Destin is often to get it alongside Gulf shrimp, a crab cake, or a lobster tail. Most of the serious seafood restaurants on the Emerald Coast execute the steak half of the equation well enough to make surf & turf one of the most satisfying plates on their menus.
Harbor Docks on Harbor Boulevard is the most consistent surf & turf option in the area. They source seafood directly from boats that come in daily — so the seafood half is genuinely exceptional. A Harbor Docks filet with fried grouper or broiled red snapper alongside is better than either piece alone. Mains run $32–58.
Brotula's Seafood House & Steamer on Harbor Boulevard does a Gulf surf & turf with local shrimp and a center-cut filet. Their steamer pots are a better value and more fun for groups, but the filet + shrimp combo is solid for mixed tables. Mains run $28–55.
AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar at HarborWalk Village is primarily about atmosphere and seafood — but they offer a beef tenderloin that's better than you'd expect. Sitting on their outdoor deck over the harbor with live music and a steak is a quintessentially Destin experience. Mains run $28–55.
Jackacuda's Seafood & Sushi on Harbor Boulevard has a filet mignon that rarely gets talked about because everyone is ordering the sushi and Gulf crudo — but it's well-executed and pairs interestingly with their creative small plates. Good for groups with mixed steak-and-sushi cravings.
Not every steak night on vacation needs to be an event. For a no-fuss dinner where you're not making a reservation three days out and the kids can order chicken fingers, a few options hold up well:
Book ahead for weekends from May through Labor Day. McGuire's fills on Friday and Saturday nights in summer — walk-in waits hit 60–90 minutes. The CRAFT at Henderson Beach Resort is even tighter; for a July or August Saturday, book at least a week out, ideally two. Harbor Docks takes reservations and fills fast on any summer weekend.
Eat early to avoid peak waits. The 5:30pm dinner slot is dramatically less crowded at every restaurant in Destin from Memorial Day through Labor Day. McGuire's on a Friday at 5:30pm might be 20 minutes versus 90 minutes at 7pm. If your group has flexibility, the early dinner is one of the best hacks for summer dining in Destin.
Shoulder season is a steak lover's window. April through mid-May and late September through October, Destin runs at lower capacity but restaurants are fully staffed and focused. A Saturday night steak dinner at The CRAFT or McGuire's with no wait and a relaxed kitchen is one of the genuinely underrated dining experiences on the Gulf Coast.
Budget planning:
A note on Fort Walton Beach: If you're driving east, Fort Walton Beach is 15–20 minutes from Destin Harbor and has additional steakhouse options. Some of Destin's own restaurant workers head there on nights off when they want a proper steak dinner — that's a meaningful endorsement. Not a significant detour if steak is the mission.
Both of our rentals have full kitchens and outdoor grills — which often beats going out for steak when you're on a vacation budget. Our Miramar Beach rental has a private pool, 4 bedrooms, sleeps 8, and starts from $225/night. Our Destin rental is pet-friendly, 3.5 bedrooms, sleeps up to 12, and starts from $110/night. Both are well-positioned for McGuire's at Destin Commons, the harbor restaurants, and every other spot in this guide.
